RARE BOARI FLAP SURGERY PERFORMED AT WEST VALLEY HOSPITAL Contact: Angela Ittu, 623-882-1502 GOODYEAR ? Earlier this month Dr.Vi N. Hua, assisted by Dr. Pankaj M. Jain, performed a rare but highly successful laparoscopic Boari Flap surgery at West Valley Hospital.? It is believed that this is first time this surgery has been performed in Arizona. The operation is done to reconstruct the ureter when a person has strictures that have caused damage. Dr. Hua said the patient on whom the surgery was performed had kidney stones that caused scaring to ureter.? ?The scaring of her ureter was so bad that it was very long,? he said.? ?You can?t really fix it without replacing it.? We actually made a flap of bladder and created a new tube connected to it and then cut off the segment that was blocked with the scar.? We then connected the healthy ureter to it.?? The surgery was performed using West Valley Hospital?s da Vinci? robot.? The patient benefits in several ways from the use of robot-assisted surgery.? ?The robot is a great tool to have in the West Valley.? It?s a very expensive tool but it is a great tool to have. Using the robot is an extension of our hands,? Dr. Hua said.? ?We can extend our hands in places where our hands may not reach.?? Instead of having to make a large incision in the abdomen the surgeons were able to go in through three holes the size of a centimeter or less.? The small incisions cut down on a lot of pain, recovery time and time spent in the hospital.? West Valley Hospital is the only hospital in the Southwest Valley that has this technology.? According to Dr. Jain, the majority of the surgeries in which the robot is used are prostate related.? ?We?ve tried to expand the application of the robotics in surgery to do other things.??
